Is Anonymity back in vogue?

Bollywood thriller movies in 70s and 80s often had a mysterious character who used to send life-saving information to police or the main protagonists, signing it as "Aap ka hamdard, ek dost" (your well-wisher, a friend).

Fast forward to the internet age, there were anonymous identities sending messages on chat or leaving anonymous comments on blogs. I am not sure about others but it used to be quite irritating to me after a few exchanges. The discomfort of shooting in the dark while the other person had all the fun concealing the identity yet saying things only those that know you well could say. Slowly, the social platforms on the web brought in checks to minimize anonymous identities.

Talk of today, a service that allows people to send anonymous messages in becoming viral by each passing hour. Blame it on your ignorance if you don't know about it yet. It's called SARAHAH... It is tempting indeed especially when one sees people posting the anonymous messages they received on this new app, up on their Facebook walls. Is this just a new fad or a game changer? There are people who are quickly getting on with the new and then there are skeptics who are holding back.

Today, when people want to trace the calls made on their mobile phones, how can they not get preoccupied with the senders of these messages? Could this tool be just one that glamorize those shady tricks of pestering people with rants, trolls and the ilk? Who would want to throw open such a channel and wait for some excitement?

The big question: Has the erstwhile victim turned into the monster hunter? Or is that the boredom that is engulfing the social media - the craving for something new? Whatever it may be but the possibilities are limitless for stalkers, trollers, and well... the secret admirers. My advice is: Judge it well before you jump in...
